4th February 2004 The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister Phil Hope: "... the Government recognise that allotments are a key element of good liveability in our local communities and will continue to be promoted as part of our wider policies on support for green spaces.......It is the local authority's duty to provide allotments where there is a demand .... I value and recognise the benefits that allotments can bring, particularly for pensioners and the unemployed. More women are also taking up allotment holding nowadays—and a very good thing it is, too". Chesterfield Borough Council The demand for allotments, throughout the country, continues to grow as people become increasingly concerned about chemicals and genetic engineering being used in farming. This has lead to a demand for home grown, organic produce to the extent that gardening has become the largest national pastime. The above can be repeated for every local community in the land, one only has to type 'allotments' into Google to be inundated with information about health and other benefits that an allotment site can bring to an area. |
